Vibraphonist Greg Harris leads his own "Vibe Quintet," is a member of Bluegrass legend Pete Wernick's Flexigrass, hip-hop/jazz/soul group Future Jazz Project, After Midnight Jazz Band and recently released 3 albums- Greg Harris Vibe Quintet "Open Space," Prospector "Memory of Pilots" featuring trumpeter Ron Miles, and "World Citizen" with West African master xylophonist Aaron Bebe Sukura. The sophomore effort of the Vibe Quintet will be released soon.
Greg received an M.M. in Music Performance, Percussion at the University of Colorado, Boulder and a Music Education and Music Performance Bachelor of Arts degree from Fort Lewis College. He recently received an award for Original Composition-Best Song, Outstanding Performance in the June 2003 Downbeat Magazine.
Aside from his jazz experience, Greg has traveled and studied in Ghana, West Africa. Ethnomusicologist and CU professor Kwasi Ampene took the graduate student along as an assistant. In Ghana, Greg learned from xylophone masters Kakraba Lobi, S.K. Kakraba, and Aaron Bebe Sukura and drumming with Johnson Kemeh. The experience changed both his world perspective and rhythmic style as a percussionist. Greg also became fascinated with frame drums, and explored styles from Ireland, the Middle East, and North Africa. He often utilizes these influences in compositions and performances. He has toured and recorded with West African master musician Aaron Bebe Sukura, and toured internationally with banjo legend Pete Wernick's FLEXIGRASS.
In addition to performing many nights of the week, Greg also is a passionate teacher. He teaches music to young adults, elderly and people with disabilities. For three years, Greg and dance choreographer Joanna Rotkin have received grants to run a program called 'As the Crow Flies', a movement program that brings together youth, elders, and developmentally disabled adults to practice and perform improvisational music and dance.
